Day 18: Palenque to Tikal area - Thursday November 25, 2010

The car was packed and we had breakfast at 7. We only missed one turn going through Tabasco before the new primary road connecting with the Tikal area. 700 Q is the no receipt “freight” to cross the border back to Guatemala. At least it didn’t take much time.

The fanciest houses in the small villages are likely to have been built with remittances from the US. To our pleasant surprise we reached our target hotel overlooking Lake Peten Itza in the mid afternoon. One can see that the new road will stimulate the local economies. I had a delicious fresh lake fish al vapor for an early Thanksgiving dinner as pavo (turkey) is served on Saturdays.

We have 2 exciting days ahead with 5:30 departure Friday.
