Day 23: Copan, Honduras to Antigua Guatemala - Tuesday November 23, 2010

We left Copan feeling enriched. The Don Udo Hotel was a pleasure. Thankfully, Julia handled the border crossing controls and we were through in ½ an hour, whereas, the poor truckers had to contend with a 1 KM line.

The rural countryside ranged from the use of horses as draft animals to tractors in the fincas. The roads were used by everybody, from trucks to pedestrians, and animals too, ranging from dogs, horses, cows, and chickens—one time, even some pigs. Driving through towns that grew around the 2 lane highways is particularly interesting when the 2 lane runs through the heart of the town market and everything moves at slow walk speed.

Guatemala City is like other great 3rd world cities: Great modern buildings and roads with a lot of the old storefronts and rich & poor residential neighborhoods – add lots of cars with inadequate, road capacity. The people are welcoming & helpful. The road signage was much better than Mexico City’s. Our impression is that Guatemala if full of energy and moving upward.

Ah! It is great to be back at the elegant Finca Filidelfia in Antigua.
