Day 28: San Martin, ES, through Honduras to Leon, Nicaragua - Sunday December 5, 2010

It was a road day from 8-3 with 2 border crossings. Each crossing required exit compliance and entry compliance, and took about 60-90 minutes. We were lucky and generous. As a businessperson, I am appalled at the bureaucratic inefficiency and found the experiences stressful and degrading. The people and bureaucrats, however, were very nice and helpful. Hopefully, technology will one-step the whole process.

The drive through Honduras went by one volcanic mountain after another, continuing to Nicaragua. One was steaming a lot. I understand that the North & South American plates meet here. The arable land was farmed. In active use: 2 ox drawn wagons with wooden wheels; several ox and horse drawn wagons with car wheels. The larger fincas had contemporary farm equipment. The highway was used by everybody and various animals for getting around and roadside marketing. Several boys had iguanas for sale. There were terrible pothole areas in both Honduras and Nicaragua. One had a big car tire in it to warn motorists. Another just had a bright vinyl girl’s shoe. (Makes one wonder if one of the ancient gods reinvented himself as the pothole god and swallowed the girl?) This can’t be good for the economy.

Leon, Nicaragua is a charming colonial university town. It has the feel of Morelia in Mexico. We are staying in a beautiful convent to hotel conversion. We dined at La Perla; another beautiful conversion – a neo-classical home into a boutique restaurant/hotel. There was a small Doo Dah type of parade by the cathedral at the principal plaza. Leon is so alive; this being Sunday night around the plaza. The afternoon and evening in Leon were a treat!
