Our day, high up the Andes and close to the clouds, has been another spectacular road adventure. At 8-11,600’, it was brilliantly clear until we reached Loja some 4 hours away. Then we were near the clouds and in the nube. Enjoy the pictures.
Except on the super highways, the Ecuadorian road is used by people and animals in their daily life. The fast drivers have relative performance cars. The old who recently learned to drive or just switched from a cart are the slowest. As you pass, you see them concentrating hard to mind the road. Buses are everywhere. There are relatively more old trucks, buses and cars that often belch smoke. Anyone or anything can be on the road -- Farm equipment, livestock and animals are frequent users. By and large, the main roads in Ecuador are excellent and in a constant state of improvement. I particularly like the switch from 1” asphalt to 8” cement for the mountain roads.
Macara is a small un-fancy border town. It isn’t Cuenca. The best room in one of the best hotels in town costs $20, including breakfast. Here is hoping the hot water works. Fixed dinner for 2: $7 -- soup and a plate of stewed chicken, spaghetti, rice & boiled yucca + 2 large beers. We are not in LA. As we write this, we can hear laughter and music on the street as the weekend begins.
