Day 33: Tabacon at Lake Arenal to Monteverde - Friday December 10. 2010

It took a solid 4 hours to cover less than 100 miles to go from Arenal to Monteverde, even though they are just 25 miles across the lake & continental divide from each other. 25 of those miles were rough off roads. The communities around here declined paved roads in order to prevent tour buses, etc. from dominating. One has to be determined to get here and it is worth it. The vistas on the drive by the lake and the continental divide were beautiful and sometimes eye popping – especially when the Gulf of Nicoya on the Pacific came into view!

Today, the Monteverde cloud forest is exactly in the cloud level. The air is so moist that as the cold breeze blows by, the air cools down just enough to mist softly without clouding. It was very pleasant on my face. Hotel Fonda Vela has lovely gardens that are much less manicured than Tabacon’s. After hard off-roading, the flora and views encourage me to reflect and to chill.
