After 2 nights in Chiclayo on the northern coast of Peru, we headed back to the Andes. The road was new and well paved, but had suffered extensive rain damage. At one point there were road crews and one-lane detours every few miles.
The comida corriente lunch in Pedro Ruiz consisted of a barley soup, fish/rice/salad for me and vegetable stew with rice for Carol, plus 2 glasses of a tea-like beverage – The bill: $2.00; but gasoline is over $6 per gallon plus 5 cents per mile road toll.
The most stunning part of the drive was through the deep river gorge heading south toward Chachapoyas. Chachapoyas is a smaller town with few tourists. We think we saw a young German backpacker. Enjoy the pictures.
We plan to spend 2 full days on the Kuelap, and nearby archaeological sites and then head back to the coast.
