Day 57: Salento - Monday January 3, 2011

The graciousness of our hosts continues. They have a little chicken coop in the back yard to provide fresh eggs every day. The fruit and juices were all fresh & tasty. The company was even better!

We visited a medicine woman a few hundred yards up the street. Both Carol and I are interested in folk medicine. Many of our everyday herbs have medicinal uses. Here are some common items: calendela – for gout; anamu for prostate; rosemary for angina; borage for cough; chayote for cholesterol, etc. I joked that she should stop looking at me each time she showed a medicine for borachos – drunkards. She has many medicines for cancer. She is extremely knowledgeable. Her garden was badly damaged in the rain.

We spent the day touring the lovely little town at about 5,000 feet of elevation. It is in the coffee and wax palms area. One is never far from music, live and recorded and dancing in town.
