Day 22: Copan - Monday November 29, 2010

We are overwhelmed by the amount of information we learned about the Maya cosmic vision. Carol was in her element and put David, a professional archeologist with 25 years in Copan, through his paces. He tied Maya mythology, such as their creation stories, with their power structure. We could visually see these through the archeological evidence. The difference in epochs was determinable from the layers of buildings. Even the waterworks tie-in with their spiritual practices. The architecture took a back seat to the exposition of Maya beliefs. We had a little exploration of the commercial aspects of the overall Maya civilization and a bit on contemporary manifestation of the classic Maya vision. Copan is definitely a key, perhaps founding, site for understanding Maya beliefs.

It is back to Antigua tomorrow. We will be moving to the 17th century. More gastronomic adventures await us!
